2021 UGA Football: Week Fourteen

 UGA Instant Analysis

Week 14: L vs. Alabama; 12-1

This week’s analysis is short for various reasons, partially because the only good thing to talk about is Brock Bowers and writing on all the negatives would be sad.

Defense earned itself the first spot for the first time this season. Georgia did not cover, did not tackle, did not play disciplined, and were bullied by a team that was bullied up front a lot this season. As expected, the deep threat killed us. Hats off to Bryce Young who won the Heisman this week. He is an outstanding player and will likely find himself the first overall player drafted after next season. At some point when Alabama clearly dedicated to short drops and quick throws, max coverage and keeping everyone in front might be the best answer, even if it is not fun or ideal for our skillsets. Regardless, there is no excuse and frankly it is confusing how Georgia played the way they did on defense. Assuming they still make the playoff, there is a lot to fix before making a run at the title.

Offense comes in at number two. I won’t break my rule of blaming the kids, they played hard and that says more than anything. There are just a lot of questions for a team with as much offensive line talent and skill position talent as Georgia has. Sometimes people try too much to be fancy in big situations, and that is how I felt about the offense this week.

Special teams comes out on top, as Jake Camarda performed to expectation and helped significantly in the beginning of the game when field position still mattered. Typically when special teams is the best phase of a game, it is not a good game.

Georgia earned a spot in the playoff, and still have the most talented team in the country. I do hope they are not paired against Alabama in the first week and look forward to watching a rematch for the title.

Top five after week 13:

  1. Alabama
  2. Brock Bowers and company
  3. Michigan
  4. Cincinnati
  5. Notre Dame

Go Dawgs!
