2021 UGA Football: Week Four

UGA Instant Analysis  Week 4: W @Vandy; 4-0 Good teams win — great teams cover huge spreads. While Georgia comfortably covered a five touchdown line, I don’t know how much we really learned for the second straight week. It was a great opportunity to see some more depth in action, but Georgia did miss a chance to improve on one area of concern: short yardage/goal line. Special teams gets the first spot today, but like last week, no unit played poorly. In fact, Podlesny continued to encourage me and the kickoff team almost scored a touchdown following a forced fumble. I have no issues with special teams play, but want to continue to point out the impact of starting defensive players and offensive skill players on special teams. These guys want to be out there and they make a tremendous impact on the flow of the game. Potential first round picks like Adam Anderson and Nolan Smith are out there busting their tails on kickoff, so let that be a lesson to young guys who think they’re too good

2021 UGA Football: Week Three

UGA Instant Analysis  Week 3: W vs.USC; 3-0 I could get used to these comfortable games, but I expect Georgia only has one more (Vandy) before a tough Arkansas team comes to town. Don’t be surprised when Sam Pittman takes down A&M and comes to Athens as a top ten team.  I have to first congratulate Georgia great David Pollack on his enshrinement into the College Football Hall of Fame. I mentioned this last season when Thomas Davis retired, but my family is from the North and my dad never really cared about college football, so as a kid in Georgia I was introduced to the Bulldawgs when David Pollack and TD were studs between the hedges. They made me fall in love with the game, and without that I don’t know how much of the man I am today would be possible. Ironically, Pollack has a similar background where his family is from the North so I really appreciate him and everything he did for UGA and for hundreds of kids around the state who looked up to him, like me. On to the game itself

2021 UGA Football: Week Two

UGA Instant Analysis  Week 2: W vs.UAB; 2-0 After a hard-fought battle against Clemson, Georgia earned a comfortable victory against UAB. I’m a big fan of Bill Clark — he seems to be a quality coach with great character — and while I was not ever worried about this game I did expect it to be a little closer. I don’t know how much we really learned about the Dawgs today, but historically Georgia does not put teams away like this, so it was great to see. Regardless, lots of fun plays and players to talk about. Special teams gets the first spot today, although all three phases were successful overall. Starting with the negative — Podlesny missed another field goal and at this point I’m concerned. A missed field goal on opening night against Clemson in a neutral site game is somewhat understandable, but a 30-yarder at home with zero pressure is troubling. Again, he showed his ability before, but he must improve to be effective moving forward. Outside of that, I was impressed with the speci

2021 UGA Football: Week One

UGA Instant Analysis  Week 1: W @Clemson; 1-0 Reminder how this works — a breakdown of offense, defense, and special teams in the order of performance (worst to best) highlighting exceptional plays and players. Another rule is to limit harsh criticism of the players considering they are just kids and typically provide their best effort during the season. It’s really hard to make judgements after week one, in fact the idea of pre-season rankings is a joke because no one truly knows how a team will be or how well the kids came together during the offseason. There are coaching departures and hires that have bigger impacts than expected, transfers who fit a system better than before, and early injuries holding some units back more than others.  All that said, Clemson is the second best program in the country with a tremendous amount of success, talent, and coaching expertise, and Kirby led his boys to a neutral site victory against them. For someone like me who advocates for Kirby to get
